Sonnenallee (1989)

In the 1970s, a group of kids grow up on the wrong (Eastern) side of the Sonnenallee in Berlin, right next to one of the few border crossings between East and West. Through their antics, trials and tribulations Leander's Haußmann's comedy shows up the absurdities of life behind the wall.

Das Leben der anderen (The Lives of Others), a drama about an East German dissident playwright and the Stasi agent assigned to monitor him, received huge acclaim, winning 7 Deutscher Filmpreis awards and the 2006 Academy Award for best foreign film.

East Germany, 1989: A young man gets arrested for protesting against the crumbling regime. His mother, a staunch communist, suffers a heart attack from the shock and falls into a coma. When she comes to, the world she knew and loved no longer exists ...

Solo Sunny (1980)

Solo Sunny is a drama by East German director Konrad Wolf, about a singer trying to make it in the East Berlin music scene. The film won the FIPRESCI film critics' prize at the 1980 Berlin Film Festival, while Renate Krößner won a Silver Bear for her portrayal of Sunny.
